The PIVOT Lab founding cohort begins September 10. Applications close September 1.

from the Map to the Terrain
with DAVE SCHOOF

Not because you've failed.

Because the world has changed. And so have you.

The strategies, frameworks, and ways of thinking that carried you here still have value.
But they were developed for conditions that no longer exist.
Applying them harder rarely creates clarity.
It creates exhaustion.

This is the threshold The Pivot is designed for.

You know this feeling.
Most capable people do.
Doom scrolling. Sunday night anxiety.
A disquiet you can't quite locate. You've done the work on yourself.
You have everything you're supposed to have. And still something isn't right.

It rarely arrives as a dramatic collapse.

More often it appears quietly — in the growing gap between effort and impact. In decisions that become harder than they used to be. In a persistent sense that something important is changing, even if you can't yet explain what.

The instinct is understandable: work harder, find a better framework, push through.

But those responses assume the terrain is temporary and the old map will work again soon.

That assumption is worth questioning.
There comes a point
when the old map no longer matches the terrain.

The accumulated logic of past success. Proven frameworks. Best practices. Expertise built through experience. Valuable — but increasingly limited when the terrain changes faster than the map can.
The Old Map
Reality as it is now. What your body already senses. What relationships are signaling. What is emerging before it is fully visible. Information that can't be reached through analysis alone, but can be recognized if you know how to orient to it.
The Terrain
The shift from relying primarily on the map to learning how to orient to the terrain. Not abandoning everything you know, but developing the capacities to navigate when certainty can no longer lead.
The PIVOT
"Going back to normal is not an option. What is required is not more effort
— but a different way of navigating."
The Response
From managing uncertainty
to developing the capacities to move within it.
From managing uncertainty to developing the capacities to move within it.
The conventional response to uncertainty is to reduce it.
The Pivot takes a different approach.
Rather than waiting for certainty to return, it develops the capacities that become more valuable as complexity grows.
The capacity to orient before reacting.
To distinguish signal from noise.
To think beyond either-or.
To work with the intelligence that exists between people, not only inside them.
To remain yourself while everything around you is changing.
This isn't simply another strategy.
It's a fundamentally different relationship with uncertainty itself.
The shift isn't from weakness to strength. It's from needing the right answer to becoming someone who can navigate well before the answer is obvious.
From control to orientation.
From the map to the terrain.

Before
The PIVOT
-
Applying yesterday's answers to today's conditions
-
Needing certainty before acting
-
Treating uncertainty as a problem to eliminate
-
Either-or thinking under pressure
-
Becoming depleted by increasing complexity
-
Success that no longer feels fully alive

After
The PIVOT
-
Orienting before deciding
-
Reading the terrain before applying the map
-
Working with uncertainty instead of against it
-
Both-and thinking when choices appear polarized
-
Remaining regulated and energized inside complexity
-
Growing because the terrain changes, not despite it
Who Finds the Work
Different people. The same threshold.
The work isn't defined by profession. It's defined by where someone finds themselves.

The Leader
You've built the career others hoped for. But the questions you're carrying can no longer be solved by experience alone.

The Coach or Facilitator
You can feel that your clients are bringing challenges that existing models only partially explain. You aren't looking for another toolkit. You're looking for a different way of seeing.

The Serious Explorer
You've invested deeply in your own development. You've had genuine insights. Now you're looking for a way to embody them in everyday leadership and life.
Begin the Work
The Pivot isn't understood. It's practiced.
Reading about these ideas can open a door. Living them requires experience, reflection and deliberate practice in a container designed for that purpose.

There Are Many Ways In.
Choose the path that best matches where you are today.
